Summer Concerts 2026: Myths and Fantasies — Lohikoskentie 2, Jyväskylä

The concert opens with Johann Sebastian Bach's Fantasia and Fugue in G minor BWV 542. A free and stormy fantasia combined with a virtuosic fugue creates a dramatic opening.

The transition to the romantic soundscape is made through Cesar Franck's Fantaisie en La - a profound work first performed on the organs of Ste Clothilde Church in Paris, where Franck worked until his death.

Finnish mythology is represented by Olli Saari's The Forging of Sampo, which draws inspiration from the story of the smith Ilmarinen forging the Sampo - the source of wealth and power.

The concert concludes with a selection from Modest Mussorgsky's piano work Pictures at an Exhibition: Cum mortuis in lingua morta takes us into the realm of the dead, Baba Yaga paints an image of a witch flying in a chicken-legged hut, and The Great Gate of Kiev rises as a festive final climax.
