Mobb Deep and Havoc: New York's hard school

Mobb Deep was a New York rap duo whose dark sonic world defined East Coast hardcore hip hop in the 1990s. Havoc was its other half and principal producer, so his shows are practically the closest way to hear this catalogue live.

Mobb Deep was an American hip hop duo formed in Queens, New York in 1990, consisting of rapper-producers Prodigy and Havoc; they are considered among the most influential artists in East Coast hip hop. The duo sold over three million records. A small detail about the name says a lot about the precision with which they worked: the two b's in the word Mobb were used so that the name would look symmetrical.

The breakthrough came with the second album. The duo's best-known records include The Infamous (1995), Hell on Earth (1996) and Murda Muzik (1999), and its most successful singles were "Shook Ones, (Part II)" and "Survival of the Fittest". The Infamous received critical acclaim and commercially reached number three on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The division of labour was clear: the production was very dark and sample-heavy thanks to Havoc, who made the beats from this album onwards, although Q-Tip also contributed to production and mixing.

The signature track "Shook Ones Pt. II" was created in everyday surroundings. Havoc made it in his bedroom in the Queensbridge housing project in Queens, and the drums were sequenced on an Akai MPC60. The track features the piano melody from Herbie Hancock's "Jessica", which was slowed down and pitch-shifted. The origin of the sample remained a mystery for years: Havoc and Prodigy never revealed the source, and the internet mystery was only solved in 2011 when a member of a hip hop forum figured it out. The esteem in which the track is held is reflected by the fact that Rolling Stone has placed "Shook Ones Pt. II" among the greatest hip hop songs of all time.

The story ended sadly. Prodigy died on 20 June 2017 in Las Vegas after choking while hospitalised due to complications from sickle cell anaemia. In practice this means that Mobb Deep's legacy is heard live today through Havoc. Interestingly, the group's name lives on: The Alchemist confirmed in February 2025 that he and Havoc were working on a new Infinite album also featuring Nas, and the record was released on 10 October 2025 with guests Clipse, Big Noyd, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Nas, Jorja Smith and H.E.R.

Havoc today: how to recognise his work

Havoc is not a nostalgia act but a still-active producer whose fingerprints can be found beyond his own genre. If his show ever lands in Helsinki, it will be the programme of an active creator, not merely a trip down memory lane.

As a producer, Havoc's career is exceptionally wide-ranging. In addition to almost the entire Mobb Deep catalogue, he has produced tracks for, among others, The Notorious B.I.G., Eminem, Nas, Raekwon, 50 Cent, Method Man, Mariah Carey and Kanye West. One more recent example: in 2016 he was involved in producing the tracks "Real Friends" and "Famous" for Kanye West's album The Life of Pablo.

Jenni Vartiainen: from Popstars to pop canon

Jenni Vartiainen is one of Finland's best-known pop artists, and the years 2025 and 2026 have been exceptionally busy for her with a new album and a TV role. Her track released in 2010 has been voted the radio song of all time.

The beginning was on TV, and the background is unusual. Before her music career, Vartiainen was a figure skater as a teenager and attended Kuopio Music and Dance Upper Secondary School, and she rose to fame by winning the Popstars programme in October 2002. The winners formed the group Gimmel, which released three studio albums, sold over 160,000 records and won three Emma Awards before disbanding in October 2004.

Success grew during her solo career.
