The most delicious detail is hidden in that very hit: Bruce Springsteen recorded the song on the first day of June 1977, the first recording day for Darkness on the Edge of Town, but the lyrics consisted of nothing more than the song's title and a little mumbling. Smith got hold of the demo and sat with it one night while waiting for a phone call from her future husband in Detroit. Fred did not call until nearly midnight, but by midnight Smith had written all the words.
A second detail reveals what kind of artist we are dealing with. Her debut album was originally meant to be released on the birthday of the admired poet Arthur Rimbaud, but a record shortage pushed the release to 10 November, which is the date of Rimbaud's death. Patti Smith is an American singer, poet and visual artist whose career began in the 1970s New York art scene, not at a record company's planning table. She is often called the godmother of punk.
The spark of her career was ignited in downtown Manhattan. Smith worked in bookshops, met Gregory Corso, Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs while living at the Chelsea Hotel, acted in plays and began not only reading her poetry but also performing it accompanied by guitarist Lenny Kaye at St. Mark's poetry events. A decisive moment came at a dimly lit club on the Bowery. When Smith began a seven-week residency at CBGB in the winter of 1975, her band had grown to include guitarist Ivan Kral and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty. The line-up, honed in the warmth of the clubs, soon attracted attention. During that time, Arista president Clive Davis signed her to a record deal. The regular line-up alongside Kaye included keyboardist Richard Sohl, bassist Ivan Kral and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty.
Smith did not make music despite rebellion but through it. Her words dealt with life from a working-class background in New Jersey to the temptations of the city and what it was like to be a woman in a world that punished intelligent and unconventional women. Horses - the album that ignited punk
Smith's debut album Horses is one of the most influential records in rock history and consistently features on all-time album lists. It combined punk energy with spoken poetry.
Horses is Patti Smith's debut album, released by Arista Records on 10 November 1975, and recorded at Electric Lady Studios in September 1975 with former Velvet Underground member John Cale as producer. Smith summed up the album in her own words as "three-chord rock merged with the power of the word". The opening track has gone down in history: the album begins with a version of Van Morrison's "Gloria", which Smith transformed into her own manifesto by weaving in lines from an early poem. The album's status has also been officially recognised. In 2009 the United States Library of Congress selected Horses for the National Recording Registry as a work of cultural, historical or aesthetic significance.
The cover image is as important as the music. Mapplethorpe's stripped-down black-and-white cover photo of an androgynous, unadorned Smith already signalled in advance what an uncompromising record was coming. The image came about by chance: Mapplethorpe knew exactly where he wanted to take the photo, and it was taken in Sam Wagstaff's white room in New York, where a triangular shaft of light fell through the window. The album's influence extended far beyond its own era. Smith's voice reached millions who felt like outsiders, and her followers include Michael Stipe and Siouxsie Sioux, among others. The album has just been given a new life: Legacy Recordings released a 50th anniversary edition of Horses in 2025.
Because the Night and the one-night lyrics
Smith's best-known song was born at the meeting point of two eras, and it is also her only true mainstream hit. The background is an unusual love story.
Springsteen could not finish the song. He struggled with it for nearly four months, and eventually producer Jimmy Iovine brought the demo to Smith while she was recording her third album. The rest happened quickly. Smith and Fred could only talk about once a week due to financial constraints and the cost of long-distance calls, always in the evenings, and one evening the expected call at 19.30 never came; Smith then played Springsteen's demo for the first time, listened to it over and over and wrote the words, and by the time Fred called around midnight the song was finished. Springsteen has given credit to his collaborator: "I could not have finished it as good as she did," he has said.
The song was released as a single in spring 1978. "Because the Night" appeared on the Patti Smith Group's Easter album, and as a single it reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number five in the UK, which helped bring Easter to mainstream popularity. The song has taken on a life of its own in other hands too: in 1993 10,000 Maniacs recorded an acoustic live version for MTV Unplugged, and it reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, which is the song's highest chart position in the United States. It remains Smith's best-known song. At the Helsinki concert it can be expected to feature in the set, as the hit tends to appear at her concerts.
Poet, author and award-winning artist
Smith is not just a rock musician. Her output extends to literature and visual art, and recognition has come from both sides.
As a writer, her breakthrough was personal and connected to Mapplethorpe, who died of AIDS in 1989 at just 42 years of age. The work created in his memory brought Smith a prestigious award: the memoir Just Kids was awarded the National Book Award, Smith has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has received numerous international honours, including the Polar Music Prize in 2011. A long period of family life interrupted her music career. Smith married Fred "Sonic" Smith and moved to Detroit to raise two children, and after Fred's death in 1994 she returned to New York and to music. From that time together comes one of her most enduring songs: "People Have the Power" is among Smith's classics alongside "Radio Ethiopia", "Easter", "Wave" and "Dream of Life".
