Aquarium (Akvapiym) is a Russian rock band founded in Leningrad in 1972 by Boris Grebenshchikov, known universally as BG. One of the earliest and most enduring acts in Soviet and Russian rock, the band blends folk, psychedelia, reggae and acoustic rock in a style that is entirely its own. Over five decades BG has released more than 25 studio albums under the Aquarium name, and his influence on Russian popular culture is hard to overstate - critics have compared him to Bob Dylan and David Bowie.
Aquarium released their 25th studio album 'Ctpannye novocti c dalekoi zvezdy' (Strange News from a Distant Star) on January 15, 2026 - the band's first album under the Aquarium name since 2022.
The album became available on all major streaming platforms on February 18, 2026, following its initial Bandcamp release.
Anatoly 'George' Gunitsky, co-founder of Aquarium, died in St. Petersburg in the summer of 2025.
BG and Aquarium have announced a European and international tour running from August through October 2026, with dates in Germany, the Baltic states and Dubai.
In summer 2022, Grebenshchikov announced a pause in Aquarium's activities, releasing subsequent records under the project name BG+ before returning to the Aquarium name in 2026.
