Janne Mertanen (born 1967 in Joensuu) is a Finnish classical pianist who built his career above all on the music of Frédéric Chopin. He won the International Chopin Competition in Darmstadt in 1992 and has since performed as a soloist across Europe, Asia, the Americas and Australia, recording for Alba Records and Sony Classical. He is also the founder and artistic director of the Joensuu Music Festival.
Finnish music magazine Rondo (5/2024) described Mertanen as the only Finnish pianist recording Chopin's core repertoire for a major international label such as Sony.
Gramophone's Jed Distler reviewed Mertanen's Chopin playing positively in the June 2024 issue.
Finnish newspaper Karjalainen praised Mertanen's 2023 Sony Classical album Chopin, calling it the work of one of today's leading Chopin specialists.
Mertanen released the album Chopin on Sony Classical, his most recent studio recording.
The Joensuu Music Festival, of which Mertanen is founder and artistic director, is scheduled for 8-14 June 2026.
