Tom Waits is an American singer-songwriter, composer and actor whose music draws on blues, jazz, avant-garde and dark cabaret. Known for his gravelly, weathered voice and cinematic storytelling, he has released 17 studio albums since his 1973 debut, with Rain Dogs (1985) and Swordfishtrombones (1983) among the most critically celebrated. He has won two Grammy Awards and built a parallel career as a character actor, appearing repeatedly in films by Jim Jarmusch and other directors.
Waits contributed a poetry reading to the Italian docuseries about homelessness in the American South.
Jim Jarmusch's Father Mother Sister Brother, starring Waits alongside Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver, was released in the US on December 24, 2025 after winning the Golden Lion at Venice.
Waits released 'Get Behind the Mule (Spiritual)', a new stripped-down version of the track, to mark the 25th anniversary of Mule Variations.
Waits appears in Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine alongside John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell and Steve Buscemi, marking his second collaboration with McDonagh after Seven Psychopaths (2012).
The photo book WAITS/CORBIJN '77-'11, documenting three decades of collaboration between Waits and photographer Anton Corbijn, was reissued in a new smaller-format edition.
