ILMU | Juurakko - Etno-Espa

Two concerts on Espa's stage: first ILMU at 16.00, then Juurakko's 15th anniversary concert at 17.15.

16.00 | ILMU

ILMU is a Nordic folk-trip-hop band from the Karelian Republic based in Tampere. The band showcases the culture of a new generation of Karelians - drawing inspiration from the ancient land's origin story, the nature of their homeland, traditions, and the beauty of the Karelian language.

In their compositions, Livvi-Karelian, also known as Aunus-Karelian, blends with traditional folk instruments (kantele, jouhikko, wooden wind instruments) as well as electric guitar, violin, and cello. ILMU was awarded in 2021 as the best Russian ethno-music project by the international jury of Russian World Music Awards 2021, and the band's music video for the song "Langat" won the best music video award at Luleå International Film Festival in Sweden.

Line-up: Tatiana Tkachenko (vocals, kantele, synthesizers), Aleksei Tkachenko (electric guitar, samplers, synthesizers), Mirva Ormin (jouhikko, bass jouhikko, vocals), Nadezhda Gornitcyna (violin, vocals).

17.15 | Juurakko: 15th Anniversary Concert In the Bog's Embrace

In the concert "In the Bog's Embrace", the audience moves through a world of nature experiences, scientific observation, and storytelling. Juurakko's suitcase, along with marine biologist and sound designer Myyri Sysivesi, is packed with multi-voiced blues singing, kantele tones, and various objects elevated to the status of instruments.
