Guided tour of Suomenlinna in English
Suomenlinna-museo, Helsinki
16 €
A guided walking tour of the fortress area in English, where you will hear fascinating stories about the fortress's history and present day.
In 1748, construction began in front of the small city of Helsinki, marking the start of Viapori's history. The best way to learn about this 270-year-old story is on a guided tour. The bastion fortress, built on six islands, served as a support base for the Swedish archipelago fleet, for which a large dry dock was also constructed. By the end of the Swedish period, the construction site had developed into one of the region's largest and most vibrant settlement centres.
The fortress's Russian period began during the Finnish War with the fortress's surrender in 1808 - an event that surprised contemporaries and sparked long-running debate. The Russian period lasted 110 years and left behind numerous barracks buildings and ramparts with batteries on the southwest side of the fortress islands - not forgetting the stories of the merchant quarter's prominent families and experiences from the Crimean War.
During the tour, you will visit main attractions such as the Great Castle Courtyard and the world's largest dry dock of its time. The guided tour also includes free admission to the Ehrensvärd Museum during museum hours.
