E-flat major carries a reputation for festivity and splendour, and the works on this programme demonstrate this quality even in small ensembles. Beethoven crowned his first collection of violin sonatas with a virtuosic competition piece, while Mozart shaped his quartet as a concertante dialogue between piano and strings.

Florent Schmitt and Maurice Duruflé represent Parisian compositional art from the early twentieth century. Their works are marked by compositional craftsmanship and particularly inventive orchestration for wind instruments.
