Koivu is one of Finland's most established singer-songwriters. He has released nine solo albums and one children's music album, as well as four albums as a member of the band Ultramarin. He first became known to the general public through cover versions of Irwin Goodman's songs. Koivu has also written songs and lyrics for other artists, including Vesa-Matti Loiri and Lassi Valtonen. In his music, he draws inspiration from folk and beat music, among other sources.

Beyond his work as a musician, Koivu has created three radio documentary series on history for Yleisradio, the most recent of which was broadcast in summer 2019. He has been nominated for the Emma Award for his solo album "Toisen maailman nimi" and for Ultramarin's album "Ydin".
