Writer Monika Fagerholm and translator Hannimari Heino discuss the Finlandia and Runeberg Prize-winning work Eristystila / Kapinoivia naisia (Teos 2025, original work Döda trakten/Kvinnor i revolt, Förlaget 2025).

In the novel, the recently adult Alice moves from the countryside to her father's suburb, to his artistically oriented blended family. Alice's time of searching begins: evening school, open university, film archive, and the best parties. She meets Pellen, who becomes her boyfriend, poet-dancer Evelyn, and Veronica, who teaches her to write like a small animal. The parents recall peacetime, but Alice's generation hears news of unrest in Germany and a rebellious woman who dies in her cell - and the walls of the safe dollhouse collapse under the pressure of world war.

The work is the first part of a three-part novel series. It tells of a time when a person is so young that the world opens as a horizon of possibilities and resistance, and of what it takes to grow up as an artist.

The event is part of Kanneltalo's Free Mondays series, which includes concerts, author visits, films, and communal singing evenings. All events are free and open to everyone. The discussion language is Finnish. In collaboration with: Cultural Services, Helsinki Workers' Institute, and Kannelmäki Library.
