Author Ari Saastamoinen visits

Non-fiction writer Ari Saastamoinen discusses his book Barbary Pirates: Captures, Religious Wars and Power Games in the Mediterranean.

The book takes readers to the early modern Mediterranean, where corsairs conducted raids as far as Iceland and fought against Europe's great powers. Caribbean piracy is widely known, but Mediterranean corsair activity has received less attention.

Ari Saastamoinen, PhD, is a non-fiction writer, teacher and ancient history researcher whose scholarly work has focused on hieroglyphics. He has also published works on Roman North Africa and the history of board games.
