4.12. Prohibition and the 1920s in Helsinki
The lecture discusses the prohibition police unit that operated from 1919 to 1932 and municipal temperance inspectors who monitored law enforcement in Helsinki. Smuggled spirits arrived by sea, and Helsinki was the country's busiest landing point - night traffic was heaviest on dark autumn evenings. The police force considered the prohibition law a mad law, as its enforcement was practically impossible and undermined police authority.
