In classical music, a fantasy is a composition that develops freely without strict formal structure. In contemporary music, this freedom is rather the rule than the exception - few composers write sonatas or rondos anymore, let alone fugues. Throughout the 20th century, works titled fantasies have been characterized above all by imaginative invention and richness of detail.

Lotta Wennäkoski (1970-): Päärme for piano, violin and cello (2014-2015)
Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943): Trio Elegiaque No. 1 in G minor (1892)
