Rose of Nevada - Love & Anarchy 17.-27.9.2026

A small coastal village in Cornwall has fallen silent, and fishing boats no longer venture out to sea. Instead, a ship arrives at the harbour - Rose of Nevada, which disappeared 30 years ago. When it is brought back into service, two men set out on the water: the penniless drifter Liam (Callum Turner) and the family man Nick (George MacKay), whose roof no longer keeps out the rain. The stages of fishing work repeat mechanically, over and over.

Mark Jenkin takes us to the familiar Cornish landscapes as in his film Bait (2019), which The Observer's Mark Kermode called "one of the decade's most significant British films". Instead of grainy black and white, Rose of Nevada is filled with saturated colours and materiality: wrinkled skin, dirty lenses, and red carnations against blue sea. The 16-millimetre film looks timeless to modern eyes.

Physical labour and the social realism of an abandoned village are cut through by ghosts and time travel. When Nick and Liam return to the harbour, they are living in the past - 30 years ago - and are no longer Nick and Liam.
