A group of prisoners fight for their souls against supernatural forces in an unbridled Indonesian genre mashup.

The cell shakes for journalist Dimas when he is found in his boss's office covered in blood, the boss impaled on the ceiling fan. Prison is a frightening place for a good-natured guy, but the gangs and sadistic guards are just the opening act: when grand guignol murders continue inside the prison walls, hell is literally unleashed.

As bodies pile up, the prisoners turn their suspicions toward Dimas. But soon it becomes clear they are facing supernatural forces and no mortal is safe. The prisoners must use every conceivable weapon to survive.

The Indonesian Ghost in the Cell breaks free from genre to genre. The ingredients are drama, horror, martial arts action, fantasy and slapstick in equal measure, often within the same scene. The film creates its own rule-breaking style, where a massacre can transform into a dance and where gore effects share space with good-natured friendship.

Particular amusement comes from the realization that the spirit hunting the prisoners selects the angriest individuals as victims. Positive thinking becomes the most valuable weapon in the struggle for survival.
