Science Evening: Mathematics in Music

Jyväskylä University's science evening explores the connection between music and mathematics - a connection that Pythagoras identified in ancient Greece. Rhythm, harmony, and tonal systems contain surprisingly much mathematics.

The experts for the evening are musician-researchers Juha Lehrbäck, Josefiina Fagerlund, and Suvi Saarikallio, who illustrate the topic both through words and by playing. During the evening, the question of whether music practice can advance mathematics learning or learning in general is also discussed. Science journalist Mari Heikkilä hosts the evening.
