Catharsis is an anarchist hardcore punk band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, active from 1994 to 2002 and again since 2012. They released two studio albums in their original run - Samsara (1997) and Passion (1999) - through the DIY anarchist collective CrimethInc., and built a reputation for politically charged lyrics, dense metallic arrangements, and relentless touring across the US, Europe, and South America. In August 2025 they returned with Hope against Hope, their first full-length record in 26 years.
Catharsis released Hope against Hope on August 1, 2025, their first full-length album in 26 years, via CrimethInc. and Refuse Records.
The band undertook a European tour in October 2025, with confirmed dates in Warsaw, Kraków, Munich, and other cities.
Hope against Hope received strong reviews in the underground press, with one outlet noting it topped their top ten list for 2025.
After more than a decade apart, Catharsis reunited in January 2013 for four shows and released the box set Light from a Dead Star.
