Kun saksofoni palaa (When the Saxophone Is Burning) is a Finnish documentary film directed by Petri Luukkainen, portraying saxophonist and composer Timo Lassy - one of Finland's most acclaimed jazz musicians. The film blends a personal portrait with concert film, following Lassy as he reflects on ageing, artistic identity and what it means to keep playing; its centrepiece is a concert filmed at Loviisa church. Lassy, born in Helsinki in 1974, has released albums internationally since 2007, won the Finnish Jazz Federation's Yrjö Award in 2020 and was named Pori Jazz Artist of the Year in 2024.
Kun saksofoni palaa had its festival premiere at DocPoint - Helsinki International Documentary Film Festival in February 2026, in the 'Rytmi veressä' music documentary strand.
The film is scheduled for theatrical screenings combined with live concerts at G Livelab Helsinki on 8 October and G Livelab Tampere on 9 October 2026.
Timo Lassy was named Artist of the Year at Pori Jazz 2024.
Timo Lassy received the Finnish Jazz Federation's Yrjö Award in 2020, the most prestigious annual honour in Finnish jazz.
Lassy's album Moves won the Emma Award for best jazz album of 2018.
