Mika Kiviniemi: Vibrating Distance

Vibrating Distance is a multi-channel sound installation composed of various metal plates. The work seeks to materialize the sensation of distance - to create an audible and tactile experience of remoteness.
The sounds produced by the plates are a kind of whistling, cautious or fierce calls to communication. Sudden bursts of the need to fill the surrounding distance. Each plate's sound track is unique.
The low murmur of restrained and smooth squares contrasts with the whining and scraping of twisted and rusty plates, perhaps conveying a certain friction between regularity and individual experience.
"The exhibition's connection to the theme new northern stems from my own experience of living in a relatively northern environment. A northern habitat and northern life contain a certain multifaceted experience of distance.
For me, distance is neither positive nor negative. It is not a value, a cause, or a consequence. Rather, it is a state in which one exists and which one experiences. Distance is realized not only through remoteness and long intervals, but also in the way people and nature exist, in sounds and landscapes. My work is a simulation of such distance experience, through sounds, surfaces, and sensations."
