Artist of the Month: Marjatta Järvi

Cold-wax oil paintings and antique teddy bears

Marjatta Järvi talks about her art:

"Over the past years, I have actively - one might say passionately - devoted myself to painting both as a viewer and as a creator. Through various painting courses, I have entered the fascinating world of cold-wax oil painting. The past spring has been filled with tremendous learning and practice in this field. I participated in visual artist Outi Hägg's master class in cold-wax oil painting, and our final works are on display at Auroratalos in EspooArt's premises from 29.5 to 24.8.2026 and at Strömfors Bruk Gallery from 31.7 to 30.8.2026. On the walls of South Haaga Library are works created with this technique over a couple of years. With my works, I have participated in various group exhibitions since last autumn."

"In a display case is a dedicated exhibition of antique teddy bears, where you can see your portrait alongside your friends, and on another level there is a woodcut collage with bear motifs. I made the antique teddy bears myself a few years ago, when many were created. Some of the bears have gone out into the world and others follow our home life on the bookshelf. Making them was also a truly inspiring hobby."

"This spring I also completed Pekka Halonen's Academy's 10-week Thematic Visual Art course, where under the guidance of excellent teachers I learned new techniques. Of these, woodcut technique interested me the most, and I will certainly continue to develop my skills in it."
