Tor Arne, Paul Osipow

Galerie Anhava's spring 2026 exhibition programme concludes with a brilliant joint exhibition by two maestros, Tor Arne (1934-2025) and Paul Osipow (b. 1939), centred on colour, light and line.

The exhibition idea emerged when Arne proposed a joint show to Osipow in summer 2024. Colleagues and friends who had known each other for decades were founding members and residents of the artist house on Riihitie in Järvenpää, established in 1967. In 1984, the artists exhibited together at the Helsinki Art Museum in a show called Arne-Osipow-Enckell.

Tor Arne, who passed away in August 2025, had already progressed far in preparing this exhibition. The small works presented in the show were completed in the artist's studio in Oulunkylä, arranged on a large work table. The works were finished with the help of the artist's trusted colleagues and family. The horizontal rectangular form familiar from Arne's work repeats throughout most of the pieces, with several curved, round and polygonal works also included.

Arne's paper-based strips filled with oil pastel layers are packed with detail despite their compact size. The paintings, drawing inspiration from collage technique, compress all that is essential into their narrow form with glowing colours. The lively surface invites you in, breathing in the light.

Paul Osipow presents new paper works and paintings in the exhibition, created during spring 2026 in Grassina, Italy. Raisin buns, onions, butter croissants and sausages from markets and bakeries have been captured on thick paper with a bamboo brush dipped in ink - the confidently flowing line takes centre stage. The placement of the motif on the sheet creates tension in the pictorial space. The paintings glow with colour and classical themes from the kitchen table - the compositions possess a rough simplicity, strong colours and juicy, thick brushstrokes.
