Chain Queen — Caisa, Helsinki

Chain Queen is a contemporary circus performance in which aerial acrobatics with metal chains opens perspectives on the relationships between power, control, and the body.

Circus artist Saana Leppänen's solo performance Chain Queen explores gender inequality through circus arts. Chain Queen dives into the intersection of power, gender, and body - not humbly, but with a crown on its head.

On stage is a person whose aerial acrobatics with metal chains is both brutal and beautiful. The chains are both obstacle and enabler, a tool of power and a symbol of freedom.

The performance plays with the forms and meanings of gender, breaks down roles, and reveals their ridiculous power structures. Drag aesthetics, embodied gender stereotypes, and explosive flirting energy interweave with physical circus art.

Chain Queen is a tribute to those who break their chains and make noise for their rights.
