In summer 2026, the iconic musical play Myrskyluodon Maija will be performed at Kivinokka summer theatre.
This emotional story based on Anni Blomqvist's novel series is familiar to many from Åke Lindman's television adaptation from the 1970s, the fresh 2024 film version, or perhaps through Lasse Mårtensson's touching song.
Jussi Helminen's stage adaptation comes to life on the scenic stage at Kivinokka by the sea, directed by experienced musical theatre director Kari Kinnaslamminen. Unique atmospheres are created by Matti Puurtinen's stirring compositions performed by a four-piece orchestra conducted by Mikko Mattila.
The lead roles are brilliantly performed by Heidi Kyrö as young Maija and Inga Sulin as elderly Maija, as well as Juho Taskinen as Jannes. The remaining roles feature an extensive ensemble of over 20 actors. Choreography by Anneli Rautiainen, costumes by Mona Aho, and set design by Maija Michelsson and Artturi Iivarinen.
The familiar story is set in the late 19th century on the barren Åland archipelago. Life in nature's embrace demands perseverance and determination through hardship after hardship. On the rocks battered by the sea, a stormy picture emerges of trials and desolation, but also of bliss, happiness and love.
