Made in Vuosaari - Vuotalo Courtyard

Much of what we use in everyday life travels by sea in containers - and Vuosaari harbour is part of this global flow of goods and transport.

In the Vuotalo courtyard, an installation takes shape following the dimensions of a shipping container's frame. Stacked tiles depict the waves of a seascape - as if they were cargo on a ship, the sea transformed into cubic merchandise. The work examines the global machinery of commodity production and local identity, set against the backdrop of ecological crisis.

Made in Vuosaari is part of sculptor Anne Roininen's Made in series, which has also been realised in Ylikiimingis in Oulu, as well as in Töölö and Kruunuvuorenranta. Roininen often works site-specifically and process-based, with encounters between artist and community forming a central part of her practice.
