Enchanting Film Yard

The Falkman courtyard open-air theatre presents classic European and American horror films from 14-19 August. Screenings are projected using a vintage 35 mm film projector, with technical support provided by Helsinki Studio Services. Refreshments and cinema snacks are sold by El Fant Cafe & Wine Bar.

Tickets cost 12 euros. Tickets are also available at the door if any remain. Seating is unreserved, so it's worth arriving early - doors open at 20:00.

21:00 Gremlins (dir. Joe Dante, 1984)

Set in a festive Christmas atmosphere, Gremlins tells the story of Billy (Zach Galligan), a boy who receives an unusual pet as a holiday gift from his inventor father. The creature named Gizmo must never be wet, exposed to sunlight, or fed after midnight under any circumstances. When these rules are broken, the town becomes overrun with the creature's relatives - and they grow increasingly mischievous. Created by director Joe Dante, screenwriter Chris Columbus, and producer Steven Spielberg, the film radiates creature-feature aesthetics and comic twists.

23:00 The Bride of Frankenstein (dir. James Whale, 1935)

From Mary Shelley's 1818 novel came the legendary Frankenstein, and after directing it, James Whale also made the sequel. Iconic Boris Karloff returns in the monster's role: having survived a mill fire, the monster wants his creator to build him a female companion. The title role is played by Elsa Lanchester.

Saturday 15.8.

21:00 Sleepy Hollow (dir. Tim Burton, 1999)

Based on Washington Irving's novella The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the film is set in 1799. Detective Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) is sent from New York to investigate a small town's unexplained murders, which locals believe are the work of a supernatural headless horseman. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki has captured the film in a dreamlike visual style.
