Matti Johannes Koivu has released eight solo albums and one children's music album, and was a member of the band Ultramariini, with which he created four albums. He became known to the general public through his cover versions of Irwin Goodman's songs. In his music, Koivu draws inspiration from folk and beat music, and has written songs for other artists such as Vesa-Matti Loiri and Lassi Valtonen. He has been nominated for the Emma Award both for his solo album Toisen maailman nimi and for Ultramariini's album Ydin.

In recent years, Koivu has expanded his work beyond music: he has created three radio documentary series on history for Yleisradio, the most recent of which was broadcast in summer 2019.

On live performances, Koivu has said: "The durability of music is tested before a live audience. I love the challenge of live performance; the way it thrills and frightens, and how music at its best frees both the performer and the audience."
