OPENING SEMINAR: WHO CARES? JOURNALISM'S ROLE IN A CHANGING WORLD

Jyväskylä Summer's opening seminar examines the media landscape and the role of journalism in the future. The focus is on questions about whether journalism matters and to whom - and what distinguishes journalistic content from other content circulating on digital platforms.

The seminar also explores who has access to journalistic media, whose stories are told, and whether regions are left without news coverage. The panelists include media executive and leader Merja Ylä-Anttila, CEO Vesa-Pekka Kangaskorpi (Mediakonserni Keskisuomalainen), journalist Oskari Onninen (Uusi Juttu), and editor-in-chief Nikke Sillanpää (Rare Media). The seminar is chaired by associate professor Karoliina Talvitie-Lamberg (University of Jyväskylä), who researches media and communication. The discussion will be illustrated live by illustrator Linda Saukko-Rauta.

Merja Ylä-Anttila has served as editor-in-chief of MTV News and CEO of Yleisradio. Vesa-Pekka Kangaskorpi is known as an advocate for domestic news media and media's role in society. Oskari Onninen is a journalist and pop critic specializing in culture and technology. Nikke Sillanpää leads RARE Media, Finland's first media producing journalism exclusively for social media and a member of the Council for Mass Media's self-regulation system. Karoliina Talvitie-Lamberg researches media literacy and questions of digital and data-driven participation.

The seminar is organized by the University of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä Summer, the City of Jyväskylä, and Mediakonserni Keskisuomalainen.
