Hanna-Kaisa Korolainen: Villinä syntynyt — Galleria Loisti, Helsinki

The exhibition features ryijy tapestries by Hanna-Kaisa Korolainen, in which female figures from Pre-Raphaelite paintings are covered with hair resembling animal fur. Alongside the ryijy works, ceramic pieces are also on display.

The work examines beauty ideals, the power of the gaze, and the model's position in art. The Pre-Raphaelites continue to shape our perception of beauty - in art history, people have no body hair, and 2020s mainstream is smoothness. Korolainen's ryijy tapestries are hand-tufted with 1970s tools, stitch by stitch, and they connect to the Arts & Crafts tradition founded by William Morris.

The exhibition includes a discussion on 11.7. at 16-18, where artist Korolainen and art historian Maria Ollikainen discuss the Pre-Raphaelites and the power of the gaze.

Galleria Loisti, 3.-12.7.2026. Tue-Fri 14.00-18.00, Sat-Sun 12.00-16.00. Free admission.
