Östersundom Cultural Landscapes

A lecture series exploring the cultural landscapes, nature, and human history of three key sites in Östersundom over several centuries. The oldest surviving buildings date from the 1700s.

3.9. Östersundom Manor
Östersundom Manor, also known as Karlvik, was established in the early 1600s when the king granted nine estates in the area to Mårten Claessons, commander of Narva Castle. The manor sits beside the Östersundom stream and later became one of the largest in Sipoo parish.

10.9. Östersundom Chapel
Helsinki's oldest church was completed in 1754 on the shores of Kappelinlahti. For centuries, the chapel served as a shared sanctuary for the eastern coastal villages of Helsinki parish and the western coastal villages of Sipoo parish. Today it is one of four churches in the St. Michael congregation in eastern Helsinki.

17.9. Husö Manor
In Husö village, there were three small peasant farms at the end of the Middle Ages. The manor, originally located on an island, only gained road and bridge connections to the mainland in the 1860s. On the manor grounds, surrounded by nature reserves, Husö Riding Centre has operated for several decades.
