Howard Smith

The retrospective exhibition of Howard Smith (1928-2021) showcases the American artist's diverse career at EMMA - Espoo Museum of Modern Art from 5.9.2026 to 7.2.2027. The exhibition is part of a series highlighting modernism's classics and innovators.

Smith, originally from New Jersey, worked extensively in ceramics, textile art, sculpture, paper cutting, collage, and drawing. He also designed public artworks for urban spaces, fabrics for Vallila, and ceramics for Arabia.

Smith is a rare example of an African American artist who had a central influence on the development of the Finnish visual field. The exhibition highlights his contributions to both art and design as part of Finland's art history.
