Tiina Hallakorpi and Minna Raskinen: Home Sweet Home - Exhibition and Sound Work

This community art project draws parallels between the experiences of refugees and evacuees: what it means to leave home under duress and build a life in a new place. The project is based on interviews with Karelian evacuees, refugees and their descendants, as well as migrants who did not arrive as refugees but cannot return home due to war or conflict.

In the exhibition, participants' stories are presented as works combining text and image using various techniques. Some participants have also sewn or written on the works. Counterbalancing the narratives are familiar household objects and textiles. The whole is designed to resemble an apartment building corridor, through which visitors move through the exhibition's different themes via apartment doors. Also included is a work open to the public, "Where Are Your Roots".

The sound work composed for the exhibition weaves together the sounds of kanteles, oud lute, flutes and percussion. Sounds from the home and surroundings complete the whole. The sound work was created partly through music workshops.
