The Peacock in the Garden - Mathias Withoos' Rome
Sinebrychoffin taidemuseo, Helsinki
0-21€
The exhibition presents the Bentvueghels artist group and particularly the work of Mathias Withoos. Withoos joined the group alongside many colleagues during his stay in Rome around 1648-1653. Rome appears in his art as landscape views framed by abundant plant motifs.
Bentvueghels emerged among Dutch and Flemish artists in Rome around 1620, and the community continued its activities for a hundred years until 1720. Group members spent time together, but alongside celebration, art-making was taken seriously - they were particularly devoted to drawing and painting outdoors and sought inspiration from Italian masters. The exhibition also features works by Caspar van Wittel (1653-1736), Jan Both (1618-1652), and Cornelis van Poelenburgh (1594-1667), who belonged to the group.
