Jazz Jkl Live: Orchestra Nazionale della Luna (BE/FI/FR)
Pianist Kari Ikonen and Belgian saxophonist Manuel Hermia founded Orchestra Nazionale della Luna, a group that has always moved beyond conventional jazz performance. The international quartet opens a new collaboration between Jazz Jkl and Jyväskylä City Theatre on the theatre's renovated small stage.
The ensemble has performed at European clubs and festivals for over a decade. Their third album "Selene's View" - a work exploring Earth's problems from the perspective of the moon goddess Selene - was released in 2024 through a collaboration between the Hungarian label BMC and Belgian Iglou.
The quartet's music breathes European jazz impressionism, free expressionism, and original compositional structures. Distinctive colours emerge from Ikonen's masterfully handled Moog synthesizer and his patented Maqiano microtonal system, which allows Arabic scales to be drawn from an acoustic piano.
Manuel Hermia (BE) - saxophone, flute and bansuri
Kari Ikonen - piano and Moog synthesizer
Sébastien Boisseau (FR) - bass
Teun Verbruggen (BE) - drums
