Emma Helle: Kamara

Emma Helle is a sculptor whose art examines questions of representation: whose stories are brought to the fore? Her works reinterpret familiar narratives and draw inspiration from art history as well as northern and classical mythology. Soft forms and theatrical presence create connections to canonical works of art history, while Helle simultaneously challenges dualistic thinking about embodiment.

In the Kamara exhibition, the ancient Venus of Willendorf and figures from Finnish mythology coexist in Helle's sprawling visual language. In the sculptures, embodiment, mythology, and geological time intersect - frogs and forest spirits carry meanings, and the surface of the human body corresponds to the earth's chamber.

Emma Helle (born 1979) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts in 2007. Her works have been exhibited at, among others, the Turku Art Museum, Lahti Visual Arts Museum Malva, and the National Museum in Stockholm, and her pieces are held in several private and public collections.
