City of Light at Toivola's Old Courtyard

City of Light fills Toivola's old yard with artworks, light and sound from 25.9 to 3.10 between 6 pm and 11 pm.

In the yard you can admire the lights and enjoy café snacks, street food dishes and drinks from the yard kiosk. Jyväskylä's Old Parsonage is also part of the week's programme: it features events, a light and sound dinner, and café and drink service. The Cultural Building hosts various events - on Friday 26.9, JKL Base Night combines music and a light show, and on Thursday 2.10, the programme includes a murder mystery.

Several artworks are on display in the Toivola setting. Kari Alonen's Hohto (2020) is located on the cellar roof, and his work Pirunpelto (2021) - which combines Olga Kolarinen's poem and soundscape - is on the cellar roof of the upper yard. Katja Rauhamäki's Tree of Fulfilled Wishes (2021) is made from broken glass bottles found in Toivola using glass insulation technique and is displayed on the house's veranda. Flower Service Vehkanna / Hanna Vehkalainen's Flowers in the Shadow of Light (2026) explores the connection between flowers, light and shadows in Storehouse 1. Storehouses 2-4 feature an art exhibition throughout the week, and there is also a surprise artwork in the yard.
