Baltic Sea Wrecks and Other Discoveries

Marine biologist, philosophy doctor, and research diver Juha (Roope) Flinkman has worked as development manager at the Finnish Environment Institute and aboard the research vessel Aranda. He is postponing this week's club meeting due to his Aranda research expedition - in return, we will hear fresh information about the state of the Baltic Sea and his experiences from shipwreck research projects.

The most famous of these is the investigation of the Vrouw Maria, which sank in 1771, conducted in 1999. Flinkman also participated in the diving group that discovered submarines from World War I in 2014 - the oldest of them, U-26, was commissioned in 1914.

Flinkman has written several works on the subject: Vrouw Maria's Last Voyage (2014) with Petri Puromiemi, S/S Hindenburg - A Wreck in the Archipelago Sea (1997) with Reima Rädy, and Fog of War - World War I in the Gulf of Finland (2024) with Markku Luoto. If possible, some of the books will be available for purchase after the event.

The club meeting is open to everyone.
