Exhibition: Maria Grabar - Suspended Summer Time

Maria Grabar has assembled an exhibition that distils her summer into small watercolour paintings. Throughout the season, she has experimented with new techniques and sought to bring fresh perspectives more actively into her artistic process. In painting birds, she has looked beyond their colourful plumage - toward the symbolic meaning of birds. The paintings of blue tit, blackbird and cuckoo are not merely beautiful birds, but also regional birds that symbolise each landscape.

Summer has also offered the chance to pause at moments easily overlooked. The long shadows of trees or slowly drifting clouds across the sky are rarely noticed, yet in the painting process - and when viewing the finished work - these moments freeze in time. Nature, its colours and the interplay of light and shadow open themselves to interpretation and feeling. The saturation of colour and the glow of light charge to their fullest in this suspended time.

Earth, sky and the birds flying between them hold their breath for a moment.
