Venus & Adonis

John Blow's (1649-1708) opera Venus & Adonis is reportedly being performed for the first time in Finland. The work tells of the goddess Venus's love for the mortal Adonis and is considered the oldest known English-language opera - it was composed for King Charles II's court in 1683.

Blow's only opera draws on the masque tradition established in 17th-century England. The work combines beauty, dance movement, and dramatic intensity.

Conductor Anna-Maaria Oramo, director Juulia Tapola, and choreographer Maria Hostikka lead the production. The orchestra is Espoo Baroque, with roles performed by Metropolia students, alumni, and guest artists.

The performance is on 7.9.2026 at 19.00-20.00 in Arabiasali, without intermission. Tickets 15/30 €. The performance is in English, with subtitles in Finnish and Swedish.
