Arttu Nieminen & Hans Pieski: Maailman katveessa / Máilmmittkus / At the Shadow of the World

This work is a surrealist journey into the complex relationship between indigenous peoples and technological development. It examines different stages of technology and their effects on indigenous life, culture, and connection to the land.

Modern technology is often seen as eroding sustainable, land-rooted ways of living - yet the Sámi have also, at least in part, adopted and benefited from technological change. The work moves within this tension, asking what relationship today's technology has with Sámi culture. Running through it is Niillas Holmberg's poetic thinking on technology's rapid integration into indigenous cultures: ancestors versus descendants, slow living versus hectic modernity, living tradition versus a world where everything seems measurable and commercialized.

In the collaboration between Hans Pieski and Arttu Nieminen, two distinct yet mutually resonant northern visual worlds meet. Together, their expression opens a view onto a space where technology, culture, landscape, and memory collide.
