Sari Palosaari: Substrate

The exhibition Substrate - substrate - refers to a nourishing and supporting foundation that enables things and generates the new. The exhibition builds around this concept by examining different substrates and the interaction between various organisms. The sculptural works consist of open and unbounded spatial wholes as well as pieces crystallized into more independent forms.

Palosaari describes her working method as "grazing" - a nutrient-seeking and grinding wandering that can be enjoyable or painful, a scurrying or boasting, but not mere drifting. For the exhibition's works, she grazed in her immediate surroundings and on the platforms of space physics.

Sari Palosaari is a sculptor and grazer. In her northern growing environment, a river dam, a mine, a pulp mill and a steel foundry shared the same backyard with a cloudberry bog, a groundwater spring, crystal ridges and a nocturnal orange sun. In her artistic practice, she creates spaces of encounter between looseness and entanglement.

Palosaari's works have recently been shown at the Art Ii Biennial, the University of Helsinki and Hakaniemi26 Studio. She is represented in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, the Museum of Modern Art EMMA and the Finnish State Art Collection.
