Everybody Digs Bill Evans - Love & Anarchy 17.-27.9.2026

Grant Geen's film captures jazz pianist Bill Evans at his darkest hour: 1961, the year bassist Scott LaFaro died in a car crash in July. The tragedy deepened Evans' heroin addiction, and his return to the piano required a forced leave with his parents in Florida - supported by his nephew's family.

Music does not dominate the narrative, despite this being a musician's biography. The use of Evans' most famous composition, Waltz for Debby, is deliberate and restrained. Otherwise the film inhabits a quiet liminal space, punctuated by glimpses of what lies ahead - more deaths, eventually Evans himself.

Black-and-white present and colour-distorted future form the structure through which protagonist Anders Danielsen Lie moves toward his next creative period. The film is complemented by a living-room concert available on Yle Areena, filmed in Helsinki's Lauttasalo in 1970: Evans performs three pieces with his trio between interviews.
