Free Film Screening and Panel Discussion: How to Build a Library — Keskustakirjasto Oodi, Helsinki
Description was written before the event

How to Build a Library (2025), directed by Christopher King and Maia Lekow, examines the challenges of decolonizing public libraries in Nairobi, Kenya. Filmed over eight years, the documentary follows writer Shiro Koinange and publisher Angela Wachuka as they work to revive The MacMillan Memorial Library, founded in 1931 and originally designed exclusively for white visitors. Colonialism is deeply embedded in the library's history - from its classification systems onwards - and transformation requires reorganizing both collections and mindsets. The government's reluctance to fund the project raises questions about the library's significance and political role.

Following the screening, the film will be discussed by doctoral researcher Priscilla Osei and researcher Eurídice Hernández Gomes from the University of Helsinki, as well as communications specialist Nahla Hewidy from the City of Helsinki. The discussion will be moderated by Evans Andrew (Kenyan Community Network Finland, Maisha Nordics, NordLink Africa) and hosted by Laura Hytti.
