Ken Matsubara

Ken Matsubara (born 1949 in Tokyo) is a Japanese video artist who has held solo exhibitions and participated in museum shows in Japan and internationally since the 1980s. His works are held in collections across Europe, the United States, and Asia.

"Moon, no thought of reflection. Water, no thought of reflecting." is Matsubara's first solo exhibition in Finland. At Helsinki Contemporary, a new site-specific video installation is on display alongside works that combine objects and moving images. In his art, Matsubara explores memories and narratives that can extend beyond individual experience and resonate across generations and cultures. His works contemplate time, the transience of being, and invisible forces hidden within objects.

Matsubara's works are currently also on view at the EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art in the exhibition "Seeking the Contemporary: From Rootlessness," which runs until February 2027.
