The Australian trio The Necks performs improvised music that transcends genre boundaries. After over 30 years together, they continue to develop their distinctive sound.
The Necks are an Australian piano trio formed in Sydney in 1987, comprising pianist Chris Abrahams, bassist Lloyd Swanton and drummer Tony Buck. Their music - long-form, fully improvised pieces that can stretch past an hour - resists easy genre labels, drawing on jazz, minimalism, ambient and post-rock without settling into any of them. With 20 studio albums and two ARIA Awards for Best Jazz Album, they are widely regarded as one of the most singular acts in contemporary improvised music.
The Necks kicked off a 2026 Australian east coast tour in January-February, supporting their album Disquiet.
The Necks released Disquiet, their 20th studio album, on 10 October 2025 - a three-disc, three-hour set of four extended improvisations.
The Necks toured extensively across Europe in 2025, with dates in Ghent, Turin, Barcelona, Bucharest, Berlin, Dublin, Bristol, Istanbul and many more cities.
The Necks released Bleed, their 19th studio album, on 11 October 2024 - a single 42-minute composition on vinyl and CD.
The Necks announced an Australian tour for January-February 2025 following a European tour in November 2024.
