Communal Singing: Singing and Understanding in North Sami
Sellon kirjasto, Espoo
ilmainen
A North Sami-language communal singing event for everyone interested in the language.
We explore a timeless tradition of Sami vocal music, beginning with a recording performed by the artist. Together we examine North Sami lyrics and their meanings, discussing in Finnish (and if needed, also in English and Swedish). Finally, we sing together with piano accompaniment in North Sami, now understanding the words.
No prior knowledge of Sami is required to participate. The event welcomes those who have forgotten the language, those curious about it, language learners, speakers who love it, and fluent speakers alike.
The event is organized by the Finnish White Ribbon League to mark the year of cultural diversity. It takes place on 9 August, which is the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.
Welcome to sing and understand!
