Community Singing: Singing and Understanding in North Sami

A community singing event in North Sami for everyone interested in the language - no previous knowledge of Sami is required.

The event introduces a classic of Sami vocal music: first we listen to a recording performed by the artist, then we explore North Sami lyrics and their meanings together in Finnish (and if needed, also in English and Swedish). Finally, we sing together in North Sami with piano accompaniment - now that we understand the words.

The event suits those who have forgotten the language, those learning it, and strong speakers alike. The event is organized by the Finnish White Ribbon Association to mark the year of cultural diversity. August 9 is also the International Day of Indigenous Peoples.
