Noora Ahonen: Decay

Noora Ahonen's art exhibition explores decay - by observing and touching the surfaces of objects, tracing their transformation through different stages of decomposition.

Ahonen describes the inspiration for her work like this: "I cycled home along the Saimaa shoreline on a rainy and windy September evening. With a quick glance, I noticed something fluttering around a tree trunk near the shore. I decided to return later.

The next day I found fabric wrapped around the tree. Plastic sticks and rubber bands had become tangled in the same pile. The fabric had absorbed beautiful brown and green tones after being washed in the shore water.

Upon closer examination, it turned out to be a children's tent that had become unnecessary somewhere on Saimaa or been blown away by the wind. I collected the fabric for future use. Someday I would know what it would become."

The exhibition's objects have been gathered while moving through the city and nature. Ahonen collects some of the materials from streets near Yö Galleria and works with them in the gallery space during the exhibition - drawing with charcoal, engraving, and sewing.
