Savoy WORLD: The Future Was Today - A Cinematic Tango Experience

Argentina's forgotten tango revolution returns to Savoy Theatre

Alongside Astor Piazzolla, another visionary shaped Buenos Aires in the 1950s and 1960s: Eduardo Rovira, who pushed tango traditions toward modern concert music and the avant-garde. The ensemble SONICO has dedicated itself to reviving Rovira's legacy, and now returns to Helsinki with its new project The Future Was Today, celebrating the composer's centennial. The performance's music draws from years of archival research that has brought Rovira's once-lost works back to life.

The Future Was Today weaves together music, lighting, video art, montages from Rovira's archival photographs, and narrative monologues. The performance features Rovira's compositions alongside rarely heard works by other tango composers of the era - Osvaldo Berlinguieri, Alberto Caracciolo, and Piazzolla.

SONICO has performed at venues including Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and their work has been featured in Rolling Stone and Gramophone. Duration approximately 1 hour 20 minutes, no intermission.
