Tanssin Aika 2026: Everything brings us back to the body

Choreographer Ehsan Hemat began planning and research for this work in 2020, the same year Achille Mbembe wrote his essay "The Universal Right to Breathe" (2020): "Everything brings us back to the body." In the piece, Hemat explores the physical possibilities of an 18-kilogram brass plate and uses reflection and echo to create a duet between the human body and a non-human object - in the dance, both are equal partners. Inspiration comes from texts by the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi and from Gaia theory (Lovelock/Margulis).

The performance opens as a dialogue between the human body and the Earth's core. Hemat investigates intimacy and resistance through the movement and sound of both his own body and the brass plate. Behind the scenography lies the history of natural resource exploitation, ecological degradation, and the systematic denial of the universal right to breathe.
